Last week, the periodical magazine ‘Sábado’ had a special issue.

It’s cover was made of a paper impregnated with seeds!

IMG_0512[1]

The all idea was to ‘plant’  the magazine!

Following the magazine’s instructions, we should put it in water, for 2 or 3 days, before planting.

IMG_0514[1]

Divertimento total!

IMG_0518[1]

The most fun was get the kids participated in the whole process.

First they felt really well the magazine’s cover and compared it with others of normal paper.

Then, they fold the paper and put it in water and it didn’t felt apart! Amazing!

Finally, they helped dig a hole to plant the magazine!

Total fun!

Mal podemos esperar!

IMG_0523[1]

Now we have to wait 6/7 weeks, according to the magazine, that the grasse and the wildflowers start to grow.

We are waintig eagerly!

Livros que tenho Lido…III / Books I’ve been reading… III

Clique para ver apresentação do livro original/ Click here to see the original presentation of the book

This book is so, so sweet!
The story of a dad who "is tall, is strong but ... every night is the same thing and begins like this: I don’t want to go to sleep"
The graphics are very simple but very funny. It is a delight to see a dad in his son’s lap, reading him the story, as well the fact that the dad is always with his hat and tie, even in bed.
The kids love the role reversal and understand very easily the difficulty of the son Alexandre to put his Daddy in bed.

This collection ' Little House on the Prairie ' witten by Laura Ingalls Wilder, has nine volumes,  is the literary work where the famous TV show was inspired.
I don’t know if you remember the series, was one of my favorites as a child and so my piano teacher ( yes, yes , long time ago I had a piano teacher , a story for another day) offered me, a book of the collection , the 2nd volume to be exact , where the family is the wild West and Laura becomes acquainted with the Indians . That volume was read and reread and from there the collection became part of my list of requests for Christmas and Birthdays . I quickly came to the conclusion that the literary work was much better than the tv series!
I started reading them , to little Papgena, when she was 5 years old . We read the first 4 volumes, her favorites are the 1st and the 3rd volumes.
In the first volume , Laura ( main character ) has 4/5 years old and lives in Wisconsin forest around 1870 with his parents and her older sister, Clara and younger sister Carrie . The day-to-day life of this girl is quite different from the present day , but what she feels ( love for her parents , conflicting emotions regarding the sisters, curiosity for what surrounds it , the meltdowns , Christmas, playtime) is timeless so it was very easy for little Papgena to love the character.
In the third volume, the main character is Almanzo , a boy of 8/9 years old who lives on a farm in upstate New York with his parents , and his older siblings ( a boy and two girls) , around 1860s. What I said to the first volume completely applies to this one too .
To me, the fourth volume come in hand, since I used it as preparation for the discovery that there is no Santa. We read it for the first time in the summer 2012, when pittle papgena was in close to entering elementary school and I knew this would be a hot topic ( and I wasn’t wrong ) so I used what Laura’s mother says to her daughters, on Christmas Eve ( the family has little money and they need horses to be able to develop the small farm that they were building and she asks her daughters to wish for horses , to be altruistic ) to start preparing the ground . At the time , I didn’t let her read the 5th volume because there is already established that there isn’t a Santa. But, now I think she has already prepared to read it, maybe even for the 6th volume also . The last 3, I’m not certain.
When little Papgena entered school , maybe fifteen days later, there she came with the news that the older kids told to the younger that there is no Santa, so I pulled book again and read to her that part again and we have a long talk about altruismand it’s symbols. But it’s a rule that here, at home, we continues to play Santa (because we have a younger child who is also entitled to its share of imagination) and that she wouldn’t go running to tell all children that there is no Santa (she has many younger friends ). And she has been brave and do it!
Back to the books , the girl loved them . Not only she likes the story but , above all, the description of the day-to-day life of a family so different from our time and with so little technology is something that delights her. The descriptions of everything they do to get food for example , from cultivating the garden , making breeding , making cheese , etc. for her, is a discovery . These books are on top of her preferences and loves playing Laura and Mary .

So when I found this book of paper dolls, was a complete success. Hours and hours around them (including drawing and cut dresses for them).

From the same publisher of the paper dolls, I found a collection of children's books, in english, adapted and illustrated. Each title takes an event of one of the original books (Laura's birthday or first Christmas in the first volume, for example) and adappts the text, having as main attraction the gorgeous drawings. I bought some to encourage little Papgena to read in english.

Cromos / Sticker Album

1ª caderneta oferecida na escola em 2012/ First sticker album that little papgena got in school in 2012

One of the things that is harder to me to get use to, in having a child in the public elementary school, is to have lost a lot of control of what goes on in her life (apart from having to deal every day with all my insecurities of her growing, of course).
Kids go to primary school and sudenly they know / discover a lot of things beyond reading, writing and arithmetic (the Santas' issue, the sex's issue - we'll talk about it another time) ... and the sticher's albums!
The panini company goes to primary schools (does this happens on your side of the world?) and delivers the albums, the kids get excited and of course ask the parents, uncles and grandparents!

Last year the first round was Animals, nearly 600 trading cards! There is no money for all of that!

2ª caderneta recebida na escola já em 2013 / Second sticker album that little papgena got in school in 2013

So, it was necessary to find ways to minimize costs and we start to do swaps.
We found that here, in Braga, there is a kiosk, near Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory, where every Saturday and Sunday mornings, young and old gather to swap stickers.

At work, there were colleagues with children the same age doing the same collection and we, parents, began swap stickers! (talk about back to school!!) and we found out the swap forums on the internet!
Este ano ofereceram-lhe esta / This year they give this on to the girls
Descobri dois fóruns na internet dedicados às trocas de cromos / I found two portuguese sites dedicated to stickers' swaps:
TROCAR CROMOS | Trocar Cromos | Troca Cromos
clique para ir para o fórum / click to go the the fórum

Troca Cromos
clique para ir para o fórum / click to go the the fórum

I only subscribe 'Trocar Cromos', the only reason being that it was the first I come across and I have no head for managing two appearances; I wolud, probably, shuffled the swaps and sent all the wrong stickers! But I have had good experiences and have been running fine all the swaps.

E na semana passada recebeu esta / And last week the gave this one to all the kids

This year, have already offered two books to the kids!
The Violeta's album from the tv show, that I don't think it's appropriate for her age, she is not allowed to see it so, I'm trying to discourage her from doing the collection.
The new Animals' album is, again, almost 600 stickers and I have to say they are creative because isn't the same album!
Maybe this time they have giraffes' sticker! The other one had not! We discovered it when the girl had to do a homework about giraffes. I wanted her to start by researching in books (as opposed to the internet) and she goes: 'I know that album through and through and there isn't anything about giraffes' and she was right!!

Livros que tenho lido…II / Books I’ve been reading… II

Ofereceram à pequena Papgena e ela adora-o!
It was offered to little Papgena and she loves it!
The book is unique, just by the big big size, a frantic and chaotic story of a family who starts to receive penguins, in the mail in the first day of the year!
The graphics are beautiful, the story is very funny and you can explore the book in various ways, especially math.

Ideas to explore this book: here and here

Encontrei um video em que se vê o primeiro livro da série / here is a video of the first one of the series

This serie's of books with little Papgena was a hit, with little Panda too! Together hearing the story ... it's A party!
A rule I learned, on the way, never read these 3 books at bedtime: it's such a chaos that there was a night that little Panda took a big tumble falling off the bed! :P
From there, I only read the books on the floor sit tight and always accompanied by the puppets and the bed, of course (little Panda is very strict about this!)

Little Papgena, has also started to read chapter books. I started read to her, from the age of five, now, she read them alone but still likes that I sit with her and often we read the books togheter.

I still have my collection of Countess de Segur's books from my childhood and some of the favorites are: Les Malheurs de Sophie, Les Petites Filles modèles, Les vacances , Quel amour d'enfant!.

Mother is ... inventing ways so the children eat!

Little Papgena, is 7 ½ years and attends the 2nd year of primary school (last year I was part of the parents' association but this year I am not).

Tem um Bom Dia!

Come o lanche que te envio

The school where she goes, it is only open from 9 am to 17h and 30m (if the children are enrolled in extra curricular activities; if not, they leave at 16h).

Tem um Bom Dia!

Este lanche está a dizer ‘come-me,
 come-me, come-me’

As both, me and Papageno, leave work, almost every day, after 18h we had to enroll her in an institution that offers to take care of the children in the lapse of times that parents are not present (ATL are the initials for this type of service, in Portuguese). Fortunately, the institution that she attended in the kindergarten (and where little panda is in daycare) covers this valence.

So, little Papgena goes to school from 9am to 16h (we didn’t inscribe her in extra activities) and the rest of the time she goes to the ATL (where she eats lunch and the afternoon snack).
However, the morning snack is taken at school and so, now I have the commitment to prepare it.

This little girl never liked to eat and has not improved (little panda is completely different! LOVES to eat!). It's always a struggle (even when she likes the food!!), so more times that not, the lunchbox was still with the morning snack in the end of the day! If we take in account that the breakfast is at around 7h 30m am and lunch it’s only at around 13h, it’s a lot of hours without eating!
I was going nuts with this!

Inspired by many blogs, I started sending her little notes hidden in the lunchbox! (written on the computer because my daughter says she doesn’t understand my letter, and her teacher also, and my husband too; and my handwriting is so beautiful ... it's very sad!).
So, here are some examples of what I send ( in case you need similar inspiration) and a blank one to write whatever you want!!!!

Tem um Bom Dia!

HAvE A NICE DAY!

PS – e não é que tem resultado??!!!! Ela tem comido!!!!!!! (figas para que continue a resultar!!!).

And it has been working!!! She is eating!!! (fingers crossed that it continues to work!!!).

 Dramatização

Hilariante!

Hilarious! It was gift to little Papgena but it is the little Panda who finds it funnier.
The story is very simple but original (hats off to the creativity of those who can make a story that revolves around ... 'poo'!) And there is a version with sounds of animals and the thing. This version is worth it because it adds dynamism to the story (and the kids react to the sound very easily).
Incidentally, an equally positive note for Kalandraka publisher, the book that was offer to little Papgena was broken and when I contacted the publisher to know how to solve the problem they sent a new one for free! 5 stars! (ah! And the book takes 3 of those clock batteries, mental note: the 3 batteries cost more than a new book, as I discovered, before contacting the publisher!).

Brilhante!!!

Brilliant! Little Panda like it so much, that it is actually difficult to read to him, because he wants that the book stays in his lap and did not want anyone else to touch it (the problem is, that the pages are very thinly and can easily tear). Little Papgena reacts with delight to the book as well because the book ‘reacts’ to what we do!

O pequeno Panda adora o final!!!

Again an indispensable book to Little Panda, who already knows it by heart. Super interactive (although it’s easy to be damaged), the illustrations are very appealing and the end ... ah! Little Panda loves the end!

Already planted in the 'garden' (the photo is too dark because it was after 19h). Also there is a HUGE Aloe Vera cactus, lettuce, parsley, strawberry feet, a cabbage and mint. Not bad for a crate!
